Episode 03 – Customer Care: When Did We Start Getting Lazy?

Nov 19, 2018

I remember being that hungry.

I had just purchased a camera and a camera bag that was way too big for the amount of lenses in my possession. I had walked down to the office supply store just a few blocks away from my day job in a fancy law firm to purchase a calendar for all of my future bookings. I was a “photographer,” now all I needed was the clients.

I was so hungry for that work; I couldn’t WAIT to get my hands on those first few bookings! I was desperate to get my first shot at a wedding. A bride and groom of my own. I wanted to treat them better than anyone else in my town.

Almost 8 years later, that hunger for work has changed and developed into to a desire to grow purposefully and strategically. But  there’s one thing that I’ve been fighting against every single week, month, year since I started my business: the thing I call the lazy brain.

LAZY BRAIN

Lazy brain tells you you’ve already put in all the hard work. Your business is successful! Time to put up your feet and let the machine run itself. You’ve earned it.

Lazy brain tells you your competition will always be miles away, because your experience/talent/stellar product will always win.

Lazy brain is a liar.

Somewhere right this minute, there’s a guy or a gal in YOUR TOWN googling “how to start a ____ business.” Fill in that blank with whatever it is that you do. “How to start a fitness studio,” “How to become an invitation designer…” They’re out there and they’re hungry. They want your clients and they want to treat them better. The only way to never lose your edge, is to fight to stay hungry and tell your lazy brain to check itself.

EPISODE 03 – CUSTOMER CARE: WHEN DID WE START GETTING LAZY?

In this episode I’m focusing in on the word CARE in the term “customer care.” Specifically, how the emotional layers of the client’s experience factor into every part of the entire process, from acquiring that client in the first place, to marketing initiatives, all the way to that final delivery.

Looking at your business through a microscope in search of these emotional elements isn’t always the most fun thing to do… It’s not the kind of work we’re excited to get to, and lazy brain tells us it can wait.

News flash: it can’t. Because that hungry newbie is getting better and better each day. The gap between their drive and your level of experience will only continue to diminish unless you forge ahead and choose hustle instead of stillness.
